Open .bmp files online

To open a .bmp file in your browser, press Open editor on the photo editor, then choose File > Open and pick your file. On 2026-10-25 we opened an 800 x 500 24-bit BMP and an 8-bit palette BMP on anyedit.app. Both showed with the right size and colors; the 8-bit file opened in Indexed color mode. We drew a brush stroke on the 24-bit file and exported it with File > Export As as PNG: a valid 800 x 500 RGB image with the stroke in it and the original colors unchanged. The important limit is that you cannot save a BMP. The Export As format list offers PNG, JPG, WebP, TIFF, TGA and ICO, and Save As wrote a .psd file, so use this page to view a BMP and convert it to another format, not to produce a new .bmp. We did not test 32-bit BMP with transparency, compressed (RLE) BMP, 1-bit or 4-bit BMP, or very large files. Nothing is uploaded and there is no sign-up.

CheckResultNotes
Listed by the engineListed in docsBMP is listed among the flat image formats the photo editor reads, next to GIF, TGA, ICO, QOI, PNM, OpenEXR and Radiance HDR; the upstream notes do not say whether BMP can be written.
Opened a 24-bit .bmpWorksAn 800 x 500 24-bit BMP (made with Python Pillow: three color bars and a white rectangle) opened as one Background layer. The document showed 800 px x 500 px, RGB/8, and the colors looked right. The file was opened with File > Open > Open..., and the file picker accepted it.
Opened an 8-bit palette .bmpWorksAn 800 x 500 BMP with an 8-color palette opened with the right picture. The tab title read Indexed/8, so the editor kept it in indexed-color mode. We did not edit this one.
Edited itWorksWe painted a black brush stroke across the orange bar of the 24-bit file. The stroke showed on the canvas and the document was marked as edited.
Exported as PNGWorksFile > Export > Export As > PNG downloaded anyedit-sample.png (11.9 KB). The file command and Python Pillow read it as an 800 x 500 RGB PNG. The sampled colors were exactly the original orange, navy, teal and white, and the stroke pixels were black.
Saved as .bmpNot supportedNot possible. The Export As format list is PNG, JPG, WebP, TIFF, TGA and ICO, with no BMP. File > Save As did not ask for a format: it wrote anyedit-sample.psd (the status bar said Saved anyedit-sample.psd), which the file command reads as an 800 x 500 RGB Photoshop image.
32-bit BMP with transparency, RLE or 1-bit/4-bit BMPNot tested yetNot tested for this format. We only used a 24-bit and an 8-bit uncompressed file.
Phone screen (390 px wide)Not tested yetNot tested for this format.
The photo editor with a test .bmp open and edited: three vertical color bars (orange, navy, teal), a white square in the middle and a black brush stroke on the orange bar

FAQ

How do I open a BMP file in the browser?
Press Open editor on the photo editor, choose File > Open and pick your .bmp file. We opened a 24-bit and an 8-bit BMP this way on 2026-10-25 and both showed correctly.
Can I convert a BMP to PNG or JPG here?
Yes. Open the BMP, then use File > Export > Export As. We exported PNG and it matched the original colors exactly; JPG, WebP, TIFF, TGA and ICO are listed there too but Not tested yet.
Can I save my edits back as a .bmp file?
No. We found no BMP option: Export As lists PNG, JPG, WebP, TIFF, TGA and ICO, and Save As wrote a .psd file. If you need a .bmp, convert the exported PNG with another tool.
Does it open 8-bit BMP files with a palette?
Yes, our 8-color palette BMP opened with the right picture, in Indexed color mode. We did not edit it.
What about BMP files with transparency?
Not tested yet. Our test files were opaque 24-bit and 8-bit BMPs, so we cannot say how a 32-bit BMP with an alpha channel behaves.
Is my BMP file uploaded?
No. It is read by code running in your browser.
